Here is the problem
I am running Win 7. I like to record music. It seems that the same problem that existed in Vista exists in Windows 7. If I don’t turn my Mic up to 100 and turn the boost up to 30 I can’t hear the vocals at all, it’s just a flat line in my sound recording program and the Sound Recorder in Accessories barely hears me. Any Ideas?
Also, if I can’t find a fix, I am going to have to partition the hard drive. I want to have it so I can launch either OS (XP or 7) when I restart my computer. If I partition my Hard Drive will I lose everything I have already on Win. 7?
Any advice on how I can start recording music would be great!

Hello all,
I recently had a trojan attack my computer the other day. I removed it right away using AVG, however, things are… weird.
It appears that I am missing many files and documents… pictures, word docs, saved games etc. However, when I open one of these programs (For example, MS Word) I can see and open the file when it’s in the “recent documents” section. But when I go to File>Open the document isn’t there.
Long story short, I’m pretty sure all my files are still on the HD. The amount of space on the HD that is used is about the same as before this incident occured. So how do I make them visible again?
Any help would be appreciated!

I do a lot of video editing and one rule of thumb is garbage in=garbage out. if you lower the quality of a video file, you will never make it high quality again.
to my knowledge there is no software capable of lowering the quality of an .mts for editing unless its converted to another format, but once you convert..you will lose the quality of the file. if your files are full 1080p, you could also have recordeed them in 720p for easier editing

Ok, here’s the deal:
I have a friend that needs files transfered from her old hard drive to a new one. I am doing this for her, because I’m a little more tech savvy, I’m just stuck.
Her old computer works but it will not connect to any monitor, so I took the hard drive out and I am putting it into my computer to transfer the files straight from that hard drive to the external one, just using my computer as a “middle man”.
I plugged in the newer (hers) hard drive to an extra cable in my computer and turned it on. It turned on just fine, but when it came to the login page it told me I had to activate the system in order for it to work.
The newer (hers) hard drive has been formated through Windows Home, and my computer is a Windows Media Center. I know this can be done, I’m just looking to be pointed in the right direction to avoid messing something up while I’m tinkering around.

I am looking for a converting software that can convert files to the .MTS video format. I have not seen any. I am not looking for converters that can convert MTS to other files, because I know there’s so many softwares like that, what I’m looking is back to the .MTS format.
Why?
I have MTS files that are too heavy for editing (Full HD) and I’d like to downgrade them to a lower quality so I can edit them faster, but still .MTS format. and Why again?
because I am using Adobe Premiere Pro, and after editing I am going to change the source files back to the original Full HD files, and Premiere only automatically detect those files if they were on the same format and filename, if not I have to do it one-by-one, and I do not want to do that. There are too many clips.

sorry for the late reply! ive been researching and looking into the problem.
Ive reinstalled vista and windows 7 and my product key is all good now so the blue sceening and freezing is the only problem. I looked through a resource and performance moniter hosted by windows and it says that i have 3 device drivers not installed? this is what the message says:
Symptom: Device drivers are not installed.
Cause: A driver has not been installed for this device preventing it from working properly.
Details: The device driver for #UNKNOWN# has not been installed. This device will not be available until the correct device driver is installed.
Resolution: 1. Try installing the drivers using Windows Update.
2. Install the drivers that are on the installation media that came with the device.
3. Check with the manufacturer for an updated driver.

In VLC, the video only displays like a frame, jitters, then VLC freezes. Sometimes it can but very choppy, etc.
The video plays well in WMP but only that after viewing some videos for a few more times, the laptop turns black. This is really frustrating. If it’s about the video being 1080p and the laptop can barely handle it, i also don’t want to convert these because I am going to edit them. Actually i’m producing a music video with AVCHD videos.

I have an ASUS K42Jr laptop with ATI Radeon 5470.
When i use Windows Media Player several times, like opening around 7 videos (like when Im checking my videos one by one), my laptop randomly turns off only the monitor/screen but I can still hear the fan and the power is still lit.
One ‘lucky’ time, the screen turns off, then turns on again, then a dialogue box error appeared at the bottom of the screen that ATI driver encountered an error and recovered. I cannot remember the exact words but that’s about it.
What could be the cause? I think it’s about the video card, but I have already installed an update on the video card and it still doesn’t work. I already followed carefully how to update drivers too. I also tried reinstalling WMP but no luck. If it’s about overheating or a physical damage or something, I’m not sure, cause I only bought this laptop around 10 months ago, and it couldn’t be that bad.

Jayare, do you have a good player to recommend for Android phone? Looks like there is not really a VLC for Android. Just the streaming version for VLC.
But I found the “Rockplayer” app. Totally awesome. There’s the lite version to try and the full version to buy.

Hi my mum is running a toshiba computer, 3 weeks new, with windows 7 and Norton 360 as security. When you open Internet explorer, the icons to the left of the writing are incorrect. Google comes up with some strange m symbol, eBay comes up with something else.
I contacted Microsoft and they said to contact toshiba, the guy at toshiba did a remote assist and I saw a whole page of error status in the registry, he explained that these were viruses etc, and if I would like to cough up $169.99 he could fix this. Because we have norton, I decided to contact them and after 2 hours on hold finally got a chap that said their were no viruses and to go back to Microsoft.
I am very confused, what causes these icons to go haywire?
All I want to be able to do is to set up mum’s favorites bar with the correct corresponding icon for website she is visiting.
Would anyone be able to shed some light on this please.

So, my laptop screen hasn’t been working for a long time so I hook it up to a projector. This weekend I was like ” might as well take off the screen since its always in the way”. After taking it completely apart and taking off the screen I put it back together and it won’t start up, the lights come on for about 3 seconds then it shuts down. Anyone have any advice? Does the screen have it be attached it work?

First post on this site, so sorry if this should be in another section or if I have violated any rules. My problem is that my internet would crash, and won’t come back up unless I restart my computer. This happens when I am downloading using one of those windows that have a pause function in them and can resume if it crashes (currently Leage of Legends), or if I visit certain areas in games (like a haunted mansion in Maplestory or outer space in Freelancer Discovery). When my internet crashes, I am unable to connect to my IP address by typing it into the web browser, MSN messenger says that the gateway is offline while it can still find my IP address, my network status says my internet is working, yet when I try to disable it, it freezes. When I use command, ipconfig /renew hangs, and I am unable to ping my gateway or my IP address, it seems to be a pretty rare problem too because I have found nothing about it on google.
Edit: also, all other devices requiring internet like my iPod works while my computer’s internet is down.

I used combofix to get rid of the annoying XP SECURITY 2011, which seems to be gone now. However, EVERY .exe file is associated with OPEN WITH… instead of directly opening that program when I double click them. For example, when I double click on the firefox icon, it takes me to the OPEN WITH….and I have to click Browse and location the Mozillla folder and find the exe in there to open it. Imagine that, but EVERYTHING application, even stuff like rundll32.exe and system recovery. (Unfortunately, I seem to have lost my recovery points altogether).
Why is this happening? I can’t even select the “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” option. This is very very frustrating. Please help!? Thank you so much. I am running a windows xp, SP3.

Sometimes we forget the simplest things and start barking up the wrong tree. I read something from Microsoft a few years back that I keep in mind while troubleshooting. It is called the DIP-CD method and goes like this:
1.) DEFINE the problem
2.) ISOLATE the cause
3.) PERFORM the repair
4.) CONFIRM the results
5.) DOCUMENT the solution
To remember this, imagine dipping a CD into chocolate.

First, let me say thanks for the great forum. I know it’s rude to make my first post a request for help and I apologize. My mother-in-law asked me to help her figure out what is wrong with her computer and I have no idea what it is. She has no internet connection at all and only uses the computer to play casual games like Jewel Quest and Zuma. She says it has been acting strange when she plays her games like shooting more than one ball or it won’t move her cards in solitaire. She says it acts like a virus but if she isn’t connected to the internet, that’s not possible. I am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all CHF visitors.
Mods not sure if I have this in the right place so feel free to move it if its not.
I have a small office I work out of and a support center on the opposite side of the parking lot. I bought the print server a few days ago to be able to have my employees print stuff straight to my office, but am having several problems configuring it so that it works properly. Any PC’s inside the network can use the server just fine but the ones in my support center cannot print to it.
I have updated the firmware to its current version, v1.19, and have tried looking at several sites for guidance so that I could resolve this on my own with no luck. The interface menu has a internet printing tab but asks for a mail server IP, not certain how to setup/or find one though. So I turn to CHF for help. I would like to thank anyone who can assist me ahead of time for your help.

Toshiba Tecra, windows 7. 4GB RAM, 64MB Graphics card from Intel.
Trying to play Dawn of War. works on my other computer that is a Vista.
Game is all updated to v1.51
I start it up and i get this message:
“The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application.”
I’ve reinstalled it once and still no luck.
I cant find anything online that can help me.(unless I’m not looking hard enough)
Can anybody give me a hand with this.

Hi there, this problem is kind of hard to explain but I’ll try my best.
When I switch to certain programs while they are minimized, their windows will sometimes not show content. For example, in the screenshot below I am using Chrome and switch to Microsoft Word. I can interact with the window (you can see the blinking line where I can type) and moving the mouse reveals buttons (as you can see from the top left) but the full page won’t display until I minimize and maximize.
As far as I’ve seen, this has happened with Microsoft Word (and Excel, etc…) and Mozilla Thunderbird.

Hi everyone, I just installed IE 9 today. Everything is fine except when I attempt to download a clip from clips4sale.com I find that the download quits at 99%. I had no problem with IE 8. I am running Vista with a Dell Dimension E520 I have Microsoft Security Essentials and had no previous problems. I can play the file at 99% but want the download to complete obviously. I can download any file from any other site and it completes. Hope someone knows the fix for this. Thanks!

my problem is that my laptop blue screen’s randomly whenever it see’s fit to so im in dire need of help.
The start of the problem was that my laptop was almost full of space on my C drive and so i decided to do a disk clean up and get rid of window’s earlier installments. ( Screwing up windows 7 instalations i had to install it 3 diffrent times and ended up with 3 diffrent operating systems and with the old vista that i upgraded from because it put my computer into a perma state of black screen) as i did this it wiped the whole of my C drive and i lost every thing :/ ive managed to install window’s 7 back onto my C drive but as i said on the topic title it blue screens alot. ive notised that the blue screening happens within 5 minutes of playing call of duty black ops and can happen in a random time when playing HON ( hero’s of newearth). aswell as this, the recovery of my blue screen is strange aswell because i did have to install a operating system on my d drive first, inorder to install on my c drive afterwards, when my computer blue screen’s, it tends to boot of the D drive instead of the C.
As you can see im fairly up sh*t creek.
when the blue screen appear’s it come’s up with this error code

Also, having installing windows 7 on a clean install, windows says that my product key is invalid but i think i have a soloution to that.. am i correct in saying i should install vista again then windows 7 because its strictly a upgrade disk?
