I’m fortunate enough to have a modern Burns Nu-Sonic (the one that sort of resembles a Tele, not the ’60′s one) that was built for me by Barry Gibson (the current head of Burns) in 2002 after the model had been discontinued. It’s got a semi-chambered ash body in green sunburst, three Rez-O-Matik pickups, a classic Burns black pickguard engraved with “Burns Of London”, a Rezo-Tube fixed bridge that was standard on those models, and a birdseye-maple neck with a pearloid-bound ebony fingerboard, scroll headstock with Van Ghent tuners, and a yellowish tint finish. It’s also the only one of that model, as far as I know, to have a two-knob (volume and tone) control layout–the production ones had a four-knob setup that included a separate volume control for a piezo in the bridge–which I asked Barry for, and he told me that the piezo setup had been problematic and he didn’t recommend it. It’s a great guitar, and answers the question, “What would a Tele look like if Jim Burns had designed it?”, although I believe Barry Gibson actually designed it.

Man, was that ash body heavy!
I believe that guitar was 9.5 pounds, plus. VERY heavy. :^(
Why put so much effort and TLC into a guitar that 95% of potential buyers won’t even plug in?
_____
Hmmm, mine sure is not as heavy as either of my R8 Les Paul’s.
If you like P90′s this is a great guitar – IMHO.
However, to each is own.

As a new owner of the AP I started searching this topic as I’m finding it difficult to place it in the chain. Before reading the manual I had it in the usual spot, the end. After, I tried their suggestion and placed it after the comp. Not liking the sound yet I’m curious will ‘clipping’ the delay cause any damage to the chip or is it just an issue of sound?

Army, Nice to hear the guitar is 100% now. I just picked up an Xaviere 820 tele, and other than the sharp fret-ends, the guitar is amazing for it’s price. I’m also sold on their pickups. I’ve put them in a MIM Strat and a Squier and was impressed with the improved sound. I think my next guitar might be one of those nice fat XV950′s.

The 5E8A has 2 x 5881/6L6 and 2 x 5U4 rectifiers and comes in at about 40W. It is the 5F8A that has 4 x 5881/6L6 and one 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier and runs about 80W.
The original thing I was talking about is this Heyboer Trans that was built up some time ago for another guy on this forum for this same kit/amp the Mojo LPTT or 5E8A circuit. Heyboer now has an actual part number for it but it is a one off build to order transformer. I am probably going to replace the original Mojo power trans with the Heyboer when I get the time in a few months. The original guy that ordered it said that it was much more responsive and ran cooler but was heavier which is not that big a deal to me. Don’t get me wrong, the amp is smokin’ and sounds great and runs quiet as a mouse since I star grounded it and heavily modified the grounding configuration but I am looking for a little more out of it.

I gig with my Pathfinder 15R at least twice a week, gigged it Friday night, in fact. There are three venues I play weekly (weakly?
) using this amp. These venues are relatively small. In two settings, I have a PA available to me, but in one of those it isn’t needed. The amp handles the room. In the other I mic it.
The settings are generally: Boost off, Gain at 9 or 10 o’clock, and Volume around noon or 1 o’clock. The Treble and Bass are generally around noon, but can vary a bit. Trem is used for a lot of things, but sparingly. The Speed and Depth are generally around 8 o’clock or less, though sometimes, for songs like “Wichita Lineman” I’ll have it up to 9 or 10 o’clock. Reverb is generally around 11 o’clock or noon.

I like the 52 reissues except for the pickup wiring (easily fixable) the 7.5 radius and smaller frets. Fender “fixed” all these things on the Hot Rod; to me it’s the pefect tele and mine plays great. I’ve switched pup’s for Antiquities (sacrilege?) but may go back. Liked the original ones, just experimenting.

A fender highway 1 Texas Tele body (purchased on eBay) and a USACG custom built neck with various eBay purchased components and Voodoo/Adder pickups. This guitar sounds and feels great to me. But i can never shake the feeling that i’m somehow “missing out” on something because i don’t own a magical “Crook Custom Tele” or some other custom built (expensive) tele. Am i truly living in the dark because my guitar is only worth (or rather only cost) $1200 to put together?
Cheers!

This is quite true, and specially if you dwell a lot around these quarters.. Lots of players would never know about Crook guitars and be happy forever with their USA model.
Said that, I play a pickups upgraded plywood $400 tele, and after months tweaking it now it plays really nice, love it. Some days ago played a $2500 custom made japanese guitar, and I felt the difference straight away. Did not even know the price of the guitar, I was trying some pedals and suddenly I didn’t care about them, I was all about that guitar
So, I guess some guitars worth the price, but there is also a lot of marketing involved. I would definitively not buy an expensive guitar without trying it first.

I’ve continued to have pretty good luck selling on Craigslist. My last transaction ended up being a trade (bicycles) but it was actually something I was looking for so it worked out well.
What continues to amaze me is the guys who will keep something on there FOREVER. There’s a guy in Denver who has had a Joe Strummer Tele for sale for at LEAST a year. To his credit, he has come down on the price, it started at $850 and now it’s at $650 I think. Man at some point I’d either give up, keep it, put it on the ‘bay or consign it or something.

personally disappointing pedals in no particular order:
Tonebone Tri-mode – great concept, used it for several months, but ultimately more pain than pleasure to use. most parameters are shared by both channels limiting tone options. and it requires different power than normal pedals.
Digitech Hot Rod distortion and Tone Driver OD – claim that they emulate 3 famous pedals each, but do little more than sweep mids from scoop to hump while the tone knob is “parametric” meaning “if I could stop the knob at 12:04:37 it would sound great, but the second hand is jumping from :37 to :49 and it goes from poo to different sounding poo.” sold them both.
danelectro fab tone – the burgundy tank of the 90′s era. I thought I was getting something like a DS-1 only with treble and bass knobs, what I got was the pedal equivalent of someone WHO TYPES IN CAPS ALL THE TIME. and man does it color the tone. still have it though.

Ouch. I can see your point there.
I believe you forgot to add nitrocellulose lacquer.
What happened is that the oil got absorbed by the Mahogany and the filler lost its body volume.
Lacquer, when added to the oil based mix is actually pushed out and wants to escape. This creates a sealing barrier between the filler and the wood.
Another issue is that the oil filler never gets totally dry and remains a little soft for years… without the lacquer barrier the filler will get rubbed out of the pores when wiped.
Add about 5%-10% lacquer (without any thinner!!! it will get the cherry look
pink) and see how it works. Please post your results.

Gil,
I’ve got a BFG, which I’m not in love with the finish. I’m thinking of going with a french polish w/ shelack, pumice and we bit of olive oil but would like to get a bit of that deep cherry into it. Will powdered analine (oil type) work?
I cant do nitro, I don’t have facilities any longer, and it’s now winter here (or our version of it) and can’t work outside.
If it doesn’t work out, trust me, this guitar cant get any uglier.

A couple of quick questions for you lot: I’m thinking of picking up a I or a II, and I wanted some advice on which way to jump… It’ll be a little amp to play around the house and when the kids have gone to bed, so quiet volumes (say polite TV levels) and a decent headphone out are essential – does the II sound as good as the I at low volumes? I figure there’s not much size or weight difference between them.
