Sage Advice

Even when there’s nothing else to harvest in my vegetable garden, I can count on a handful of herbs to be ready and waiting at any time of year. Like thyme and oregano, my sage plants are four season wonders, but I have a special appreciation for them at Thanksgiving. My turkey and stuffing would not be the same without fresh sage.

Growing out of speed garage, bassline (the genre, not the musical element) first came to prominence in the early part of the century.
Although it’s recently been out-shone by dubstep, bassline shouldn’t be forgotten, which is why SampleRadar is celebrating it today.
What you need to know
The samples are split into three folders: Bass loops, Beats and Drum hits. The Beat loops are also supplied as REX files for maximum flexibility.
All the samples are supplied as WAV files so can be imported directly into your DAW or sampler of choice. Because they’re royalty-free, you’re welcome to use the samples in your music in any way you like – all we ask is that you don’t re-distribute them.
The bassline samples are supplied in a zip file, so you’ll need to extract them before you can see them. Enjoy!

Ferny Friends

Another group of plants I’ve come to have great respect for is the ferns. Granted, they aren’t as drought tolerant as grasses, but they’re almost as undemanding. Half the time they show up in my garden on their own. They are well-behaved, look good all season, have few pests and their soft fronds make the nearby plants look that much better.

What Plant Do You Hate?

‘m not talking about weeds and thugs; what perfectly respectable plant do you hate? Be honest. We all have certain plants that we just can’t stand the sight of. I’ll start. I hate Lamb’s Ear and Verbascum. They look like weeds. They’re related to weeds. Once their scraggly blooms are done, even the foliage gets ratty. And I have never seen a child get excited about touching the leaves of lamb’s ear. Kids like bright flowers. OK, I’ve said it. Now it’s your turn. What plants do you hate?

Summer’s Lemon Scented Herbs

Lemons are so versatile in the kitchen and their scent seems to whet the palette while at the same time cleansing it. I don’t have the climate for growing lemons, but right now my garden is bursting with lemon scented herbs. My current favorite is lemon basil. (If only someone would breed a larger-leaved lemon basil for those of us who are too impatient to pick apart all those tiny leaves.) My herbs plants are finally bushy enough for me to indulge with abandon and knowing how short summer is, that’s exactly what I intend to do.
